Temmim Wexley was a bit hard to swallow and given how the film just casually discards him, it was hard to get invested into him. I hated Jas Emari although I can't tell you why. Christa Agate, despite her unfortunate name, could have been interesting but was never given much of a chance.Īnd then we get to the bad parts. The many short cameos were the most fun part for me and strangely enough my favorite was the one with Jar Jar Binks! Admiral Sloane is a good, capable villain and Gallius Rex is. There were a few nods to Imperial warlords with their own breakaway domains but they were quickly brushed over and I wish they had been expanded on. Han and Leia were nicely handled and the politics of the New Republic had me hooked. Sinjir and Nora were interesting characters. I know a lot happens but I remember very little of it and my view is that a lot of the plot could easily have been streamlined.īook three finally gets to the famous Battle of Jakku and at least that part I did enjoy, although again, I'm a bit fuzzy on details which doesn't happen often with me when I'm enjoying a book Since all the villains die off at the end and there are no further consequences, you're better off just ignoring itīook 2 gets to the main plot of the story and is therefore important but by now, I was reading the book out of sheer stubbornness and a desire to give the sequel trilogy a fair go (this was just after TLJ and before TROS for context). My view is that the first book is completely unnecessary and serves only as an overly long introduction to the main characters. Having once followed him on Twitter, this seems to be something he relies on frequently in his writing, and I cannot overstate how off-putting and obviously affected it is. I do blame Wendig for indulging his often cutesy, twee,'modern-internet' prose style. A lot of his vignettes, in which he was free to go nuts imaginatively, showcase a tonne of really terrific ideas. It's to Wendig's credit that he made 'Life Debt' and 'Empire's End' satisfying, in spite of the fact that he basically had to cut away whenever his story was about to risk touching on the central characters or factions. I enjoyed the second two, but that was after the initial shock of realising that a book sold on being about the immediate aftermath of Return of the Jedi had obviously been ordered to write around 95% of the stuff readers purchasing such a book would be interested in: Luke, Leia, Han, the leadership of the New Republic, the main remnants of the Empire, etc. I also don't blame Wendig for how deeply unsatisfying some aspects of the first novel are. It reads like a novel which had to be written within a month and a half (I'm pretty sure it was!) I don't blame Wendig for that. Maintain a polite, academic style discussion atmosphere.
